Understanding your past; planning for your future

Featured Practice: Child Custody

For divorced/separated parents of school-aged children, the approach of summer vacation can be a source of worry and tension.  Disagreements arise about changing custody schedules, vacation planning, and summer activities.  They can put a real damper on the sunny days ahead.  Planning ahead, cooperation, flexibility and communication between parents can go a long way toward avoiding pitfalls and reducing friction as you approach the summer months.

Get out the paper calendar or use a shared google calendar.  If you and the other parent cannot peacefully be in the same room exchange your calendars so everyone knows where the children are to be and when.  Hopefully, you told each other about vacations dates well in advance of the actual day to leave.  Provide the other party with flight information, addresses of hotels and contact information so as to avoid confusion.  Make sure the two of you have agreed on the camps and other activities so your children do not expect one thing and another occurs.  Smooth transitions and met (reasonable) expectations will be of great benefit to your children’s emotional well-being.

In some situations, however, even your best efforts can fail to resolve these conflicts.  In that case, it is wise to consult a family law attorney and try to get ahead of problems before they escalate. Please visit our Custody   page to learn more about our services, or to get in touch with one of our family law practitioners.
